Spurgeon and the Psalms

I was preparing to go to the hospital as a package was delivered. I picked it up and brought it along with me. A new volume for review.

This, Spurgeon kept me company as I bounced between 2 waiting rooms, one for my husband and one for my mother. Waiting is hard, it feels passive but drains you as it’s actually active. Praying, worrying, hoping, and constantly watching and listening for a name to be called. I know my husband will be done, recover, and soon to go home, but there is so much of the unkown walking to the other waiting room to check on my dad.

They said my mother had lung cancer, several biopsies will have to be done. My dad is sitting in a chair in that fidgety resignation that says you can’t help right now all you can do is wait. So while you wait you can tune everything out or you can stand at the doors of heaven and beg for help.

“ No eloquence in the world is half so full of meaning as the patient silence of a child of God. "Truly my soul silently waits for God.? It is an eminent work of grace to bring down the will and subdue the affections to such a degree that the whole mind lies before the Lord like the sea beneath the wind, ready to be moved by every breath of His mouth, but free from all inward and self-caused emotion, as also from all power to be moved by anything other than the divine will. We should be moldable to the Lord but adamant to every other force. "From Him comes my salvation." Good people will therefore in patience possess their souls till deliverance comes: faith can hear the footsteps of coming salvation, because she has learned to be silent. Our salvation in no measure or degree comes to us from any inferior source; let us therefore look alone to the true fountain and avoid the detestable crime of ascribing to the creature what belongs alone to the Creator.” Spurgeon on Psalm 62

Oh, bring down my own will and make me moldable!

If you have not yet been acquainted with the remarkable Charles Spurgeon, this “Psalter” is a good beginning. His Treasury of David is a 3 volume set of Psalms. That is not exactly a companionable way to read his thoughts.

Thomas Nelson has created a volume that fits comfortably in your hands and can easily slid into a bag. It’s about the size of a traditional journal which maintains its devotional friendliness and there is space to add your own thoughts.
The comfortable font with 9.5text size also means you don’t have to strain with tiny print. You can just enjoy the wisdom on the pages.

This is a beautiful book. It would be a wonderful gift.
