Young women love God Greatly

 I was truly blessed with a great selection of Bibles to review for Thomas Nelson.

Before my brother went overseas as a chef in the Middle East, he told me about the NET translation. As a nonnative English speaker it was a version he could understand and easily translate into the numerous languages he speaks. It is a great resource for communicating eternal truths.

In 1995 the NET Bible translation project began at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature as an English version for distribution over the internet. Thus the “NET” Bible’s name. It was begun back when there was no free online Bible sites, like “pre-google” for those young  people who don’t remember the dark ages before internet, or what a BBS is. Bible translations have copyrights and limit the number of verses you can publish without paying royalties. This was a revolutionary idea to get the Bible online free to anyone.

Another goal they had was to keep it continually updated and to make corrections as needed, with feedback from pastors and teachers. Another thing they did was to make available an extensive amount of notes….more on that in a future post.

This edition of the NET Bible was a delightful surprise. Most Bibles geared to teens, young adults, or kids, have cutesy or dumbed down versions of adult study notes and questions. Honestly I think this is my favourite Bible I have reviewed. I haven’t found anything that I dislike about it. I am nearing 50 and I look forward to adding it to my scripture reading . And I want to buy on for so many now!

Spurgeon and the Psalms

  I was preparing to go to the hospital as a package was delivered. I picked it up and brought it along with me. A new volume for review. This, Spurgeon kept me company as I bounced between 2 waiting rooms, one for my husband and one for my mother. Waiting is hard, it feels passive but drains you as it’s actually active. Praying, worrying, hoping, and constantly watching and listening for a name to be called. I know my husband will be done, recover, and soon to go home, but there is so much of the unkown walking to the other waiting room to check on my dad. They said my mother had lung cancer, several biopsies will have to be done. My dad is sitting in a chair in that fidgety resignation that says you can’t help right now all you can do is wait. So while you wait you can tune everything out or you can stand at the doors of heaven and beg for help. “ No eloquence in the world is half so full of meaning as the patient silence of a child of God. Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible

This reminds me of my childhood.  My mother would drag us kids all over Washington DC for Bible studies. The moms would be at the table discussing and pouring over scripture,  and all us kids would be on the living room floor or a side room, with matchbox cars, GI Joe's, My Little Pony, or Strawberry Shortcake.  Small things that traveled well. Do moms still do this? The serious Bible teachers, especially if they did precepts, or the like, all had a Thompson's. It was a treasured and yes, coveted Bible edition.  The woman who discussed scripture with my at the time very pagan mother,  owned a Thompson's. My mother would discuss spells and such with one neighbor and Miss Vicki would show up in our backyard in Italy, and take path after path of scripture, following the scarlet threads, and point my mother to Messiah.
